… into one of your laptop’s USB ports. It will immediately set itself up, providing you with a steady connection to your broadband router. These adapters are readily available from high street retailers like Maplin for about £10-20.

Sound connections becoming faulty?

If your sound sockets are become faulty, you can replace them with ones which plug into a USB socket. Here’s a picture of an adapter:

They replace the sound card built into your laptop, providing replacement headphone/speaker and microphone sockets.

Being on a USB connection, they can of course be used with desktop PCs, but are ideal for laptops/netbooks because of the high cost and hassle of replacing their built in sound card (where it’s possible).

Laptop USB ports

If 1 or more of your laptop’s USB ports become faulty, you can often plug in an adapter in a “card slot” in the side to add 2 or even 4 new ones.

They can even be FASTER than the ports you have if you buy a USB 3.0 one

if you’d like me to check if your laptop has a card slot, just add a comment with the make and model and I’ll reply.

Reading memory cards

Most laptops and all netbooks have a built in card reader, allowing you to read SD cards, used in most digital cameras.

The slot may be hard to spot, as it’s a small (usually on the left hand side or front).  If never used before, it may have a “placeholder” card inside, push gently to release.

You push your memory card in gently (copper side down, generally) ….. and to remove it you simply push it in gently and it ejects a little for you to remove.

Need to read a smaller MICRO SD CARD (used in most phones) ? All you need is an adapter – available from many retailers including Maplins very cheaply.

My favourite one is shown below because it’s tiny and can be put on a key ring (I bought my last one on www.amazon.co.uk)
